Research

1. Why research?

According to the US Medical School Admissions Handbook, 88% of admitted student have involved in research in undergrad years prior to medical schools. On average, US medical school have 7-10% student already had an advanced degree such as PhD or MS. These student already finished their graduate degree before medical school. This shows research is important in US medical school and almost a requirement. For students apply to competitive residencies such as plastic surgery, surgery, surgery subspecialties, or dermatology, etc. - research is a must. In addition, for future fellowship application, a good research record will enhance your chance when you apply.

For Vietnamese Medical Graduates, we already have some disadvantages due to language or location. Therefore, in order to increase the chance to get into US residencies, even the less competitive ones, VMGUS strongly recommend that you should participate some kinds of research.

A research project can be simply as some case studies or chart review. With a large Vietnamese patient population, I believe that there some research opportunities in Vietnam. VMGUS hopes to initiate some research projects in Vietnam that VMGUS members can participate.

In VMGUS forum, we will introduce some basic concepts about basic science and clinical research. If you have some knowledge in research, please share with us here.
