Specialties for IMG

One of the most frequently asked question is "What are the IMG friendly specialties?" That means what specialties that Vietnamese Medical Graduates can apply with the highest success rates.

According to National Resident Matching Program [1], in the last few years the most number of unfilled positions was offered in:

· Internal Medicine 43% filled by IMG
· Family Practice 52% filled by IMG
· Psychiatry 34% filled by IMG
· Pediatrics 25% filled by IMG

These specialties are less competitive simply because most AMG (American Medical Graduate) do not want to go due to lower salaries or working conditions. For example, the average salary for internal medicine physician is 170,000 USD per year while average salary for ophthalmology physician is 300,000 USD per year [2]. But keep in mind that most AMGs have an average debt of 150,000 USD after medical school. This debt is going to increase even more in the future. VMGUS members, on the other hand, do not have considerable amount of debt after medical school (Most are free-debt).

Therefore, VMGUS recommends applying to these specialties. Other specialties are obtainable but it is more difficulty. Once you get into internal medicine, you can apply for fellowships such as cardiology or hematology. The chance to match varies from specialty to specialty.

To match into these specialties above, the requirements are not too difficulties. For examples, VMGUS candidates with 85 or above for both step 1 and 2 are considered competitive for family practice.
